The ALS Laboratory Group's Tribology Division expands its fuel testing services with the addition of a new sulfur analyzer at their Portland, Oregon, laboratory. The recently purchased instrument utilizes monochromatic wavelength dispersive XRF technology to accurately and precisely determine the sulfur content in a variety of fuels, such as No. 2 S15 diesel fuel, S15 biodiesel, and S15 biodiesel blends where the sulfur limit is below 15 ppm.

Use of ultra low sulfur diesel fuel for on-road applications is legally required by federal emissions standards. Off-road applications, such as marine, locomotive, and farming, are currently still allowed to use S500 diesel fuel. However, in 2010, the phasing in of the ULSD requirement for off-road applications begins. By the end of 2012, nearly all diesel fuel will be required to be S15.

Not only is the S15 requirement mandated, but it also provides operational benefits. The lower sulfur content in S15 diesel fuel oils produce less sulfuric acid when combusted, which lowers the amount of acidic attack on the oil. Therefore, use of S15 can reduce the base number depletion rate of engine oil, which makes S15 diesel fuel a necessity when using CJ-4 formulations. The improved base number retention can potentially lead to extended drain intervals, resulting in lower consumable and maintenance costs.

ALS Staveley Services continues to expand its industrial and power generation lubricant analysis services with the application of the RULER- (Remaining Useful Life Evaluation Routine).- The RULER- is technically referred to as Linear Sweep Voltammetry and is used for the measurement of hindered phenolic and aromatic amine antioxidant content.- The test has received wide recognition for its complementary significance to varnish potential analysis and provides valuable information for monitoring the service life of industrial oil and power generation lubricants.

Hindered phenols and aromatic amines are primary antioxidants used in many industrial oil and zinc-free turbine oil applications.- By measuring the depletion and available reactivity of these antioxidant compounds while conducting other routine performance tests, the service life of used lubricants can be effectively monitored.- Adding the RULER- to your industrial and power generation lubricant test package through ALS Staveley Services will produce additional and valuable oil oxidation information in order to optimize lubricant performance life and equipment reliability.

Staveley Services Fluids Analysis is proud to announce its EPA approval for testing Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel (ULSD) at its Chicago, Illinois location.- Newly mandated by the government, refineries must begin producing a new diesel fuel with 97% less sulfur for the over-the-road market segment. This new fuel is known as Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel and will be made available in all filling stations by October 15, 2006.

Our Chicago, IL laboratory coordinates with our network of labs throughout the country to properly route ULSD samples for testing.
