Testing Services

ALS Tribology provides over 100 specialized ASTM tests that cover many combinations of conditions, fluids, and applications. We can tailor a testing program to meet your individual needs and provide recommendations to help you successfully implement a state-of-the-art program. Basic testing services are broken down into six categories:

Engine Oil Analysis

ALS Tribology has been supplying quality fluid testing services to over the road fleets for over 40 years. Whether the lubricant is a mineral oil base or synthetic, we have a testing program to fit your needs. We provide our customers with a test report that provides valuable information on the corrosion, contaminant and physical properties of their lubricant. ALS Tribology also provides specific recommendations on the maintenance actions required based on the overall sample condition. We derive these recommendations from a vast database of information garnered from over 40 years of analytical experience in lubricant analysis. We also maintain constant contact with all of the major original equipment suppliers and major oil companies for their latest specifications. Our primary test packages for used diesel oil samples are the Basic Preventative Maintenance and Extended Drain packages.

Our Basic Preventative Maintenance test package includes the following:

  • Spectrochemical Analysis (20 elements for wear metals, additives and contaminants)
  • Viscosity @100OC
  • Fuel Dilution
  • Fuel Soot
  • Glycol

ALS Tribology Extended Drain test package includes the Basic Preventative Maintenance package plus Total Base Number. Oil analysis from ALS Tribology provides the fleet maintenance professional with an invaluable tool for their predictive/preventative maintenance programs. A well-managed fleet oil analysis program cannot only decrease overall maintenance costs, but extend equipment life, decrease downtime and improve equipment trade in value. Our labs complete typical engine oil samples within 24-48 hours of sample receipt. This realistically puts our customers in the "fix before failure" mode, which can translate into real bottom line savings. We can customize our testing packages to suit your individual needs. Coolant Analysis

Engine cooling systems are more complex than ever before and are a vital component in the health and service life of today-s modern engines. With the design changes in modern engines cooling systems, engines have to work harder than ever, which puts increased demands on today-s coolants.

ALS Tribology provides comprehensive coolant analysis programs and advanced coolant testing capabilities. Testing monitors the condition of the coolant to ensure proper cooling system operation. Early detection of potential problems allows you to better determine when additives are needed to maintain the necessary level of corrosion protection. Just as in the case of engine oils, the coolant in your radiator, whether ELC, Hybrid, or Fully Formulated Conventional, can be exposed to contamination, coolant dilution, additive mixing, and oxidation due to extreme temperatures. Laboratory coolant testing removes all uncertainty and regular testing allows you to closely monitor your coolant system.

Pure water in diluted coolants provides the best source for heat transfer. However, tap water contains minerals that can cause scale and sludge deposits and lead to corrosion. By closely monitoring water in your coolant you can minimize the detrimental effects of these minerals and corrosion.

ALS Tribology routinely analyzes conventional and -extended life- organic coolants as well as fully formulated and hybrid fluids and maintains all of the approved (and in some cases proprietary) methods for testing. Our laboratories offer a complete line of coolant testing capabilities. Test results are laid out in a comprehensive, easy to read format and can be sent via e-mail or immediately accessed through our online data management system. If your sample tests critical you will be notified immediately.

BREAKTHROUGH TECHNOLOGY FOR EXTENDED LIFE COOLANTS
ALS Tribology is pleased to announce a revolutionary new method for testing in-service extended life coolants (ELC). ALS Tribology uses advanced liquid chromatography instrumentation to obtain rapid and inexpensive, yet accurate results. While this technique is very similar to that used by the coolant manufacturers and other research grade laboratories, ALS Tribology is the first lab in the country that has developed a method that is fast enough to be economically offered to any coolant user while still being accurate and reliable for predictive maintenance programs.

All our laboratories in the United States and Canada offer the following BASIC Coolant Package which is appropriate for Conventional and Fully Formulated Coolants:

Basic Coolant Package

Our laboratory in Cleveland, Ohio offers additional advanced testing procedures and our new Organic Acid Technology measurement using HPLC instrumentation.  The following are ADVANCED Coolant Packages offered in Cleveland:

Advanced Coolant Package

ALS Tribology offers a full slate of testing capabilities for coolants and can customize packages based on customer needs and application.  The following is a listing of individual test procedures for coolant:

Industrial Fluid Analysis

When choosing a laboratory to analyze your plant's lubricants, consider these FACTS:

  • The storage, handling, dispensing and disposal of lubricants will typically cost four times the cost of a gallon of the same lubricant.
  • The cost of lubricant, filters and oil analysis is usually less than 1% of a plant's operating budget.
  • The budget to maintain lubrication equipment is typically 14 times the cost of the lubricant itself.
  • Industrial plants regularly document that comprehensive oil analysis has decreased their maintenance cost from 10% to 20%.
  • If you can save just 2% of your maintenance costs due to oil analysis, you would be saving $28,000 for every $100,000 of lubricant you buy.

With these kinds of documented savings being attributed to oil analysis, it is no wonder why more plant maintenance personnel choose a ALS Tribology managed lubricant analysis program to augment their preventative/predictive maintenance program.

We employ methodologies such as direct reading and analytical ferrography, wear particle analysis, particle counting, infrared analysis, x-ray fluorescence and wet chemistry to determine not only wear particle metallurgy, but type, concentration, characteristics and source.

Our testing programs cover a wide range of industrial markets and applications, such as:

  • Primary Metal Processing
  • Power Plants
  • Pulp and Paper Mills
  • Mining
  • Automotive Assembly
  • Chemical Processing
  • Metal Fabrication
  • Offshore Marine

Contact your ALS Tribology customer service representative and let us create an industrial oil analysis package for you.

Metalworking Fluids Analysis

Contaminated and degraded metalworking fluid can cause serious health, environmental, tooling, and product quality problems. Manufacturers and users of metalworking fluids are faced with the challenge to maintain a healthy environment for its workers by reducing the amount of waste to be treated, while maintaining product quality at a reasonable cost.  Properly maintained metalworking systems will prolong the fluid’s life and optimize the performance of the fluid. Knowing the condition of your fluid is important for product quality and tool life.

ALS Tribology has extensive testing for specific additives and concentrates to ensure the product you are using is within manufacturers’ specifications. The right combination of testing will supply you with valuable information to help you maintain the highest level of fluid performance and long fluid life.

Why Sample?
Problems can arise if a system is not well maintained including, but not limited to, poor tool life, corrosion, rancidity, increased residue, skin irritation, dirt buildup, foam, and bacterial growth. All of these and other problems will increase the costs to restore a system to its proper parameters, as well as extra labor and machining required.  A fluid testing program can help to answer the following questions:

  • Is the fluid safe to use?
  • Does the fluid contain the proper concentration?
  • Does the fluid have a foul odor?
  • Does the fluid have an unusual appearance?
  • Does the fluid contain tramp oil?
  • Are there any employee health related issues?

Typical Test Packages

Over 35 additional tests specifically for metalworking fluids are available.  For more information please e-mail us at [email protected].
